  1. Law prohibiting the publishing of any
  2. material that tends to deprave or corrupt. In
  3. Britian, obscene material can be, for
  4. example, pornographic, violent, or can
  5. encourage drug taking. Publishing includes
  6. distribution, sale, and hiring of the
  7. material. There is a defence in support of
  8. the public good if the defendant can produce
  9. expert evidence to show that publication was
  10. in the interest of, for example, art,
  11. science, or literature. In the US the law
  12. prohibits books, films, etc that, when judged
  13. by contemporary standards, are found to have
  14. a prurient interest in sex, be patently
  15. offensive, and have no serious artistic,
  16. scientific, or social value.
